Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis

Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis have similar personality, jobs, and some physical features. They are both corgis, but the two breeds have become different over time. The oldest records date back to around the 10th century for both corgis. Which breed that came first has not been proven due to the lack of records, the likely reason for two separate breeds is that certain traits were passed on generation after generation. Eventually those certain traits formed both of the Pembroke and Cardigan Corgi breeds.

Differences Between Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis

Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis have a few noticeable difference that can be seen at first look. Most of the time Pembroke Corgis do not have tails. Cardigan Corgis will have tails. Pembroke Corgis may still have their tails has some places will not allow their tails to be docked. The next thing is legs. Pembroke Corgis will have stubbier legs than Cardigan Corgis do. Both breeds are fast, but that is a easily noticeable difference. The last main difference is in the face. The features in both corgis’ faces are slightly different.

Similarities Between Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis

While there is a difference in Pembroke and Cardigan Corgis, there are similarities between the breeds too. Both Corgis were commonly used as herding dogs. Corgis are the smallest of the herding dogs but make up in speed. They were commonly used in the Wales for herding sheep but have also been able to herd many other types of animals too. Like in the first paragraph, both of the corgi breeds have similar personalities. While they may differ to some degree depending on how that corgi was raised, the energetic and loveable parts are always there.

Adopting a corgi and buying a corgi both has it’s benefits and problems. Which ever one is better for you will depend on what you are looking for when getting a corgi. Adopting a corgi would be better for those who are looking to get one for a family pet while buying a corgi would be for those who are more into competing.

Adopt A Corgi

When you adopt a corgi there are a few things that usually a corgi has been trained for already. Most adopted corgis are trained for one if not all of three things (leash, potty, and crate training). If he or she had just arrived not too long ago at the shelter then it is likely they haven’t been trained for any of those. Also when adopting a corgi, he or she will be up to date on his or her vaccines most of the time. Again this may depend on how long the corgi has been there for.

Adopting a corgi tends to mean your getting a corgi who is some where around the age of two to eight. This doesn’t mean you won’t find a corgi who is under two or over eight years old, but commonly dogs in a shelter will be within the range of those six years. Another thing to note is that you may want to check why that corgi ended up in the shelter. This can give you an idea on the personality of that corgi before you take him home. A corgi’s personality isn’t set in stone, you can change it if the previous owner abused that corgi and you provide that same corgi with a loving home and care. It just may take some time to change and during that time, you will have to be careful on how you interact with your adopted corgi.

Buying A Corgi

Buying a corgi is almost the exact opposite of adopting a corgi. When you buy a corgi, that corgi will usually be under a year old, most of time around only six to eight weeks old. They won’t be trained at all meaning you will have to train them and deal with the possible accidents in the house and other challenges of training.

Since the corgi is a puppy, his or her personality will be developing. Depending on how you raise him will shape your corgi’s personality. Most of the time, a corgi will reflect the owner’s personality in some way.

The major upside to buying a corgi is that your corgi will likely be a purebred. This is for owners who want their corgi to compete in major competitions and not really important for those who are looking for a pet.

Adopting Or Buying A Corgi: Which Is Better?

Each has its upsides and downsides. Adopting a corgi usually means the corgi you’re getting is trained, but yet is older. Buying a corgi usually means a younger corgi, purebred, and needs to be trained. Those looking to have a family pet would be better off with adopting a corgi while those who are looking at competing would want to buy a corgi.

Feeding your Corgis can be a problem sometimes. Especially when they become possessive of food. They may even up fighting over food, steal another Corgi’s food right in the middle of him eating it, or with treats, bite your hand in the process of giving it to them.

Corgis Fighting Over Food and What To Do

Corgis fighting over food can be caused by several things. First is that your Corgis are too close together when eating. They think one of them might try to steal their food and break into a fight if the other gets too close. Try having your corgis spaced out around the room, or even in different rooms while eating.

The other common cause of fighting is if a Corgi doesn’t know which bowl of food is for who. It is also a good idea to try and feed all of them in the same order every single time. That makes sure that each Corgi knows who’s food is going into what bowl. Using a bowl unique to each of your Corgi is another way help them differ between which food is for them.

Corgis Stealing Each Others Food

When a Corgi tries to steal another Corgi’s food, most of the time it will result in fighting. Sometimes the Corgi may give up the food to the other trying to take it, but it’s unlikely it’ll happen. The reason this happens is either that Corgi is setting the example that is more dominant, or that he is not getting enough food. Try putting them in separate rooms to keep this from happening. This problem will go away most of the time after a while  if you wait it out.

Corgis Who Are Impatient With Food

There are times when a Corgi will try and get to get their food and run. While taking a bite of your hand in the process. They happens to be more of a problem when giving them dog treats then with dinner, but is still a problem. Most of the time it start with the simple thing of your Corgi being impatient and they become more impatient every time. Eventually your Corgi will be grabbing the treat out of your hand.

This habit is fixable by using the same methods as you would with other things you would teach your Corgi. When your Corgi tries to be impatient and grab the treat out of your hand, command using the phrase ‘NO’ and wait for him to calm down a little bit. Once he has, praise him and give him the treat. If your Corgi has a habit of biting your hand while you give a treat to him, try dropping the next to him or tossing it to him.

When your Corgis try to fight or food or steal each others food, remember to try and keep them separate even if it means putting them into different rooms. It’s better to have to do a little extra work than have them fight and possibly hurt each other. If you have a problem with a Corgi trying to grab a treat before your ready to give it to him, remember that this habit is possible to reverse. All it takes is a little teaching and will make a difference. Also try dropping or tossing the treat to him instead of handing it to your Corgis to prevent getting bitten by any of them.

Tip One On How To Train A Corgi Puppy: Voice

Trying to train your puppy can be easy or hard depending on where you are training your corgi, and what your training your corgi on. But when you praise your corgi, you must make sure you are praising your corgi in a soft voice, and not in a loud, harsh voice.

Now depending on where you train your corgi puppy matters too. If your trying to train your corgi to sit while your at a party, or to sit while your next to a busy road in rush hour traffic, chances are, your not going to teach your corgi much. Try a location such as a backyard away from busy streets or empty room with no distractions.

Tip Three On How To Train A Corgi Puppy: Timing

If your trying to train your corgi puppy to not go on the carpet or on the couch, you don’t watch your corgi go on the couch then yell at him or her ten minutes later for that. All that does is make your corgi thing your being mean and doesn’t know what he or she did wrong. But if you see your corgi going on the floor and not in the spot he or she should be going to the bathroom in, you raise your voice and tell your corgi no.

When you put off training what your corgi needs to learn in about a week for a party or something like that, and you try to teach your corgi on that same day five hours before your event. Your corgi puppy will tend to get bored after the first thirty minutes you try to train during those hours.

So when it comes to training your corgi for a long period of time, make sure to space it out and let your corgi puppy have breaks in between so your corgi doesn’t get bored. If your puppy doesn’t get it within the first several days, don’t give up, and keep trying to train your corgi that command. After a while, your corgi should be preforming it on command, and make sure to give some positive reinforcement to make sure your corgi knows he or she has done a good job.

There are three types of aggression that your corgi could have, dominance, possessive, or territorial. Two of the aggressions ( territorial and possessive ) may cause your corgi to attack to keep their area or item safe which could lead to a injury for your corgi or the other dog that your corgi thinks is trying to take what is theirs. If your corgi has any of these aggressions, you must train your corgi to behave in public before it ever goes out to see people or things may go wrong.

Dominance Aggression Of Corgis

Dominance aggression can be just try to stay top dog. Most of the attempts of dominance that any dog tries effects people who don’t know that their corgi is trying to be more dominant. Your corgi may try and gain dominance by your corgi eating first, getting on top of you if your playing close to the ground, you move out of the way when your corgi blocks you off, or your corgi wins any game that uses strength. Dominance aggression is one of the hardest to be trained to stop because of instinct. Being more dominant than your corgi will stop this from occurring.

Possessive Aggression Of Corgis

Possessive aggression commonly happens with the runt of the liter due to survival instincts and how a pack works. The main problem is trying not to get bitten by getting near what your corgi is guarding. The item may be something as simple as a bone in most cases or food. Your corgi’s aggression for possession of something tends to stop when he or she gets older. Possessive aggression may also be to protect you, which can be a problem if other dogs are around. Again this tends tends to fade away when your corgi gets older, but sometimes it may not. But like dominance aggression, being more dominant can help stop your corgi from being as possessive over stuff.

Territorial Aggression Of Corgis

Territorial aggression, tends to be similar to possessive, but differs in some parts. Your corgi is protecting something, usually an area which he or she claims is his, while allowing certain dogs or humans to pass. Anyone which your corgi considers a stranger may be warned then attacked if the warning is ignored. This can be a serious try of aggression depending on what your corgi is trying to protect. This type of aggression will occur in younger and smaller corgis. Many times it is because of instinct that this happens. When your corgi is older this aggression, like the others, will fade. But the same thing with being dominant can also fix this problem.

Lots of Pembroke Welsh Corgis walking around and trying to get attention of the person recording the video. Some of these Corgis had almost the same markings like my younger Corgi, and some had the tricolor like my older one, but it black was a darker tent and more visible. This video earns a rating of 8 of 10.

This video has to Welsh Pembroke Corgis puppies playing around and fighting over toy. The tail on the Corgis kind of remind me of one of my Corgis, and the two in the video get along as well as the two Corgis I have. The video earns a rating of 7 of 10.

Over a half dozen cute Cardigan Welsh Corgi puppies trying to herd a cat, then go off to play with some toys, back to finding the cat, and so on. At the end, with the Corgis tired, the Corgis go off to sleep for tomorrow. My rating for this ( on a 1 to 10 scale ) is 9.
