Becoming The Alpha Dog To Your Welsh Corgi

Becoming alpha can be hard because of the simple mistakes you make that convinces your corgi he is top dog.

But five most commonly things that make your corgi think he’s alpha may seem unimportant to you.

1. When taking your corgi out for a walk, or to the dog park, or the vet, you go out first. The leader is always in front, and no one who isn’t alpha gets ahead of alpha. Making sure you are always ahead of your corgi, will help your corgi learn who is the leader.

2. When it comes to eating, alpha gets to eat first, then what ever the alpha dog doesn’t eat, the rest of the pack gets the scraps. This doesn’t mean that you should eat most of your dinner, then take what’s left over and give it to your corgi. Just that when it comes to eating, you eat, if your corgi begs for something, just keep on eating and ignore your corgi, and after you’re done, you feed your corgi.

3. If you’re walking in a narrow hallway and your corgi is just laying there in the middle and won’t move, don’t just walk over your corgi. Just gently get your corgi to move out of the way, and don’t hurt him. If you move around your corgi or step over him, it’s like your telling him he is top dog, and I shouldn’t get in his or her way.

4. Giving your corgi attention can be a big part of being alpha or not. If your corgi is begging for some attention, just ignore your corgi until you’re ready to give him or her attention. When your done giving attention, take away and put away any toys you were using to play with. And if your corgi begs for some more attention, just ignore him until you’re ready to give some more attention.

5. Do not let your corgi sleep on your bed. When you’re letting your corgi sleep on your bed, your corgi could try to boot you off the bed and make it his own. Leaving you with the nice comfortable floor. When you don’t have to make your corgi sleep on the floor, you could get a doggy bed for him, but he can’t sleep on the floor. If you have a bed that your corgi can just jump right on to, you can leave your corgi out in another room to sleep. But if your corgi is being trained not to chew, you can try a bed that is like a bunk bed, but doesn’t have the bottom bed so your corgi can’t get on it.

When Your Corgi Rolls In Dog Poop

Corgis sometimes roll in their own waste and other things.

For hunting (birds, deer, and other things), dogs in general have to cover up their scent by rolling in something a lot more powerful or worse smelling then theirs. Corgis, like most dog breeds, have this ingrained through evolution.

This instinct is hard to correct to where your corgi will not roll in something that smells. But it may take some time till your corgi has learned not to roll in something that smells.

Two things to help your corgi learn faster is to become alpha leader, and make sure your “NO” is given as a command during or immediately before the time your corgi starts to roll in something he shouldn’t.

First Aid for Your Corgi Dog

There are many different disasters that may happen while you’re outside walking your corgi or even playing around inside your home.

For traffic accidents, there are some steps to get your corgi over to the vet with causing any harm. It is best not to move your corgi, but if you must move him (for example to avoid oncoming traffic), carefully place your corgi on a sheet or blanket to help move him to a safer place.

Make sure to stop any bleeding by placing a rag around the wound. It should be wrapped so that it stays on and stops bleeding.

The last step is to call your veterinarian (or emergency animal hospital), tell what happened, describe the wounds, and state that you’re on your way.

If your corgi gets burned, run cold water over the burn for long as possible while calling your vet (or emergency animal hospital) for advice on what to do next.

If your corgi is left alone on a hot day and suffers from heat stroke, the first thing to do is to is douse your corgi in cold water to lower his body temperature. Then drive your corgi over to the vet or animal hospital for treatment.

Although it is difficult to identify poisoning, symptoms can include bleeding, vomiting, and twitching.

Call your corgi’s vet, an emergency animal hospital (or poison control). If you know the poison, tell your veterinarian.

If not, try giving your dog salt and mustard in water to get your corgi to throw up whatever it is he ate. Try and describe to your vet what your corgi vomited.

To rescue your corgi from drowning, you must remove the water from your corgi’s lungs by placing your corgi’s head lower than his body. Then, you have to open your corgi’s mouth, then pump his chest by placing your hands on the ribs, adding pressure, then releasing the pressure immediately. Repeat until all water is removed from your corgi’s lungs. Once he’s breathing on his own, take your corgi to the vet.

Choking is from your corgi eating anything he probably shouldn’t have. This may be a piece of bone or a toy. In any case, look and see if you can see the object in your corgi’s throat, then look at the steps for drowning rescues (see above) for how to remove the object that is causing the choking. After removing, or if not being able to remove the object, take your corgi to your veterinarian or emergency animal hospital immediately.
