Westminster Kennel Club Snubs Corgis Again

welsh corgis pembroke cardiganThe snobs at Westminster Kennel Club have once again dissed Cardigan and Pembroke corgis. Let’s be clear – there is an inherent bias at the club for fluffy weird looking breeds that Manhattan elites can use to attract attention to themselves. That’s less a family member and more a status symbol, i.e. a lousy way to treat any dog regardless of breed.

Neither corgi breed placed in the Best of Group (Herding). If you want to see photos from the Best of Breed judging, simply click this link, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click the “photos” link by each of the winners.

As for the club, it gets a thumbs down for not giving corgis a fair shake in the competition.

Of course, our corgis don’t need ribbons. They’ve already won our hearts.

02-13-08 Update – A beagle won Best in Show. Doesn’t make up for stiffing the corgis but at least a ‘normal’ dog won top honors. Kudos to the club for doing the right thing.

Here’s the link to a story about George, a 7-year-old Cardigan corgi, who competed at Westminster, won second place honors as “Best of Opposite Sex,” and will now retire. Retirement will include spending time at a Bethlehem, Pennsylvania elementary school where he serves as mascot.
